Local Groups

There are several security-focused groups in Iowa. Though they each have their respective focuses, active membership would certainly increase both your knowledge and connections.

  • ISACA Des Moines - focuses on audit issues and meets monthly over lunch.
  • ASIS Des Moines, Eastern Iowa - focuses on risk and meets often
  • Sushi and Security (website coming soon) - focuses on security education and meets monthly over dinner.

Job Postings

There are a great many job posting sites. It doesn't make sense to add to the confusion by creating our own job forum, so if you either wish to post or search for a job, please use one of these sites:

Training

Like it or not, Iowa is simply not viewed as a good destination for traveling security training. Many times, it seems as though as getting high quality training requires a trip out of state. However, that is not necessarily the case. If you wish local training, the following options are available.

  • Josh More provides technical training in conjunction with The SANS Institute. If you wish to pursue a GIAC certification like GSEC, GSLC or GCIH, please contact Josh More through his personal website.
  • Dave Nelson provides managerial and audit training through his own company. If you wish to pursue a CISSP, please contact him through his business website
  • DMACC offers a Digital Forensic Investigation Certificate. If you wish to work in law enforcement and deal with digital evidence, check out their program
  • Spindustry offers local training in many subject areas. Their IT Security course listing is here.
  • Iowa State University's Information Assurance Center provides education to post-secondary students and is involved in the Cyber Defense competition. If you wish training for free, consider serving on a team. It won't be structured training, but you'll learn a lot.
  • IT Adventures is a multi-entity partnership aimed at teaching high school students. Again, if you wish free learning in a non-structured environment, consider volunteering for this program.
